Documented Biography
Mayawati was born on 15 January 1956 in New Delhi into a working-class family. She completed her Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education, and Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degrees from the University of Delhi, working as a schoolteacher while preparing for the civil services.
Recognising her oratorical strength and political conviction, Kanshi Ram mentored her from the early 1980s as a core organiser in the newly established Bahujan Samaj Party. She contested elections and rapidly rose as one of the most prominent female political leaders in northern India.
In June 1995, Mayawati made history when she was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, becoming the first Dalit woman in independent India to head a state government. She subsequently served four terms in this office (1995, 1997, 2002–2003, and 2007–2012).
During her 2007–2012 tenure, she led the BSP to an outright legislative majority—the first single-party majority in Uttar Pradesh in over two decades. Her administrations implemented targeted rural development schemes (such as the Ambedkar Gram Vikas Yojana), law-and-order governance measures, and the construction of public memorial parks and monuments dedicated to historical Bahujan reformers across Lucknow and Noida.
